Despite what some outside Detroit may think, Lions head coach Dan Campbell isn’t just a master motivator—he’s also one of the sharpest offensive minds in football. That’s the message former NFL lineman and three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth delivered on his FS1 show, “Breakfast Ball.”
“Dan doesn’t get enough credit,” Schlereth said. “He’s a great offensive mind. He’s heavily involved in how the offense is structured, how they use personnel—he knows the Xs and Os inside out.”
Schlereth’s comments come at a time when many are questioning the Lions’ offense following Ben Johnson’s departure to become the Bears’ head coach. But Campbell’s fingerprints were all over Detroit’s offensive success even before Johnson took over play-calling, and Schlereth emphasized that Campbell’s deep understanding of offense should keep the Lions competitive in 2025.
Campbell’s expertise stems from a decade-long NFL career as a tight end and years coaching in the league, shaping him into a tactician who knows how to get the best from his players.
