When it comes to NFL rumors, few names generate as much buzz as Deion Sanders. The idea of “Coach Prime” stepping in as the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach has fans speculating, but it’s not as simple as it sounds.

While the thought of Sanders joining the Cowboys is thrilling, there are significant obstacles—particularly financial ones.

Currently, Sanders is under a five-year, $29.5 million contract with the Colorado Buffaloes. Leaving early would cost him—or a potential suitor—a reported $8 million in buyout fees. For the Cowboys, valued at over $10 billion as the world’s most valuable sports franchise, that might seem insignificant. However, even Jerry Jones, the team’s billionaire owner, must weigh his decisions carefully. After all, not every financial move Jones has made in recent years has been a winner. Adding a buyout fee to an inevitably large new contract for Sanders would be a hefty commitment.

The numbers speak volumes. Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys’ current coach, earns $8 million annually. Meanwhile, Sanders’ base salary at Colorado is set at $5.9 million. Making the leap to the NFL would likely require a significant raise, potentially putting Sanders in the same league as Sean Payton or Andy Reid, who command deals worth up to $100 million over five years. While Sanders’ star power might justify the payday, the Cowboys are known for their tough contract negotiations.

For his part, Sanders hasn’t stoked the rumors. In a recent interview, he praised Jerry Jones but reiterated his dedication to Boulder and the Buffaloes. With his son, Shedeur Sanders, expected to be a top pick in the NFL Draft, it’s clear Deion has compelling reasons to stay in college football—for now.

While the thought of “Prime Time” coaching America’s Team is exciting, the reality might be much more complex.
