Lions Urged to Reunite With Familiar Face Ahead of Camp

Training camp is almost here, and the Detroit Lions are gearing up for another run at the top. Rookies report to Allen Park this week, with veterans not far behind. There’s a ton of excitement around this team—and for good reason. The roster is loaded, expectations are sky-high, and fans are hungry for a Super Bowl breakthrough after last year’s close call.

But there’s still one position group that could use some help: linebacker.

Injuries tore through the Lions’ LB room last season. Alex Anzalone and Derrick Barnes missed time, and Malcolm Rodriguez is still recovering and might not be ready for Week 1. That kind of uncertainty means Detroit might want to have a backup plan. And there’s one name that should be on speed dial: David Long Jr.

Long is no stranger to the Lions. He suited up for five games last year after being cut by the Dolphins, and even earned a start. In limited action, he racked up seven tackles, a tackle for loss, and a fumble recovery. He also contributed on special teams, playing nearly 60 snaps.

Dan Campbell loved his energy and ball-hawking instincts when they first brought him in—and Detroit could use a little more of that right now. After a short stint with the Titans that ended due to a failed physical, Long is still on the open market.

If the Lions aren’t confident in their depth heading into camp, don’t be surprised if Long’s phone rings soon. He’s not a flashy name, but he’s the kind of smart, hard-nosed player who fits this team’s identity—and he could be just what they need in a pinch.
