It wasn’t that long ago Allen Robinson was torching defenses and putting up 1,400-yard seasons. Now? The former Lions wideout is still sitting on the sidelines as training camps open across the NFL.
Robinson, once one of the league’s most promising young receivers with the Jaguars, has seen his production dip year by year. After stints with the Bears, Rams, and Steelers, his brief time in Detroit didn’t do much to change the narrative. In 2024, he was targeted just seven times and finished the season with only 30 yards.
It’s a tough pill to swallow for a player who once looked like a franchise cornerstone. But at this stage in his career, Robinson’s value lies less in stats and more in leadership. That’s likely why the Lions gave him a shot in the first place—to bring a veteran voice into a young, promising receiver room.
Still, with Detroit stacked at wideout heading into the 2025 season, there’s no real path back for the 30-year-old. And honestly, he’s not the only veteran WR waiting by the phone right now. The league’s flooded with young receiving talent, and teams have no shortage of cheaper, faster options.
If Robinson is going to extend his career, it’ll probably have to be on a low-risk deal—something that gets him into camp just long enough to show he’s still got something left. Whether or not he gets that chance remains to be seen.
But one thing’s clear: the Lions have moved on. And the fact that Robinson remains unsigned only reinforces that they made the right call.
