Familiar Face Returns: Hooker Links Up With College Buddy in Camp Shake-Up

The Detroit Lions have quietly upped the ante in the backup quarterback showdown by signing former Tennessee running back Jabari Small, reuniting him with his old QB buddy Hendon Hooker from the Volunteers days  . Small, who spent last season on the Titans’ practice squad, brings firsthand chemistry with Hooker—having rushed for 127 yards and two scores in a key win over LSU back in 2022  .

While Small is technically a camp body, reintroducing that familiar on-field rapport could give Hooker a boost in the critical battle against Kyle Allen for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Jared Goff  . With the Lions’ preseason opener (Hall of Fame Game on July 31) fast approaching, coaches are believing any extra edge—even as subtle as enhanced timing and comfort with a familiar backfield partner—can be significant.

The move emphasizes Detroit’s focus on sharpening camp matchups and maximizing every opportunity. Whether or not Small makes the roster, this reunion offers Hooker an early-season spark and a compelling storyline as camp heats up.
