The veteran linebacker and team captain made headlines this week after revealing he’s “disappointed” by the state of his contract situation. Anzalone is entering the final year of a three-year deal and believes his play — and leadership — warrant an extension.
“It’s just kind of obvious… production, play, the market,” he said, pointing to the rising linebacker salaries around the league.
Despite his frustration, Anzalone showed up to training camp on time and passed his conditioning test, but a hamstring injury is currently keeping him off the field. That hasn’t stopped speculation, with some analysts suggesting this could be a strategic “hold-in” — a way to send a message without skipping camp.
Still, Anzalone made it clear that he wants to finish his career in Detroit. “I want to retire a Lion,” he said, reinforcing his loyalty even amid contract uncertainty.
Head coach Dan Campbell praised Anzalone’s commitment and leadership, saying he expects him to play a key role again this season — once healthy.
Now the ball is in the Lions’ court: do they reward their captain, or risk letting a respected voice in the locker room grow more distant?
