The Detroit Lions opened Saturday’s practice to their season-ticket holders — and fans were treated to some welcome sights: the return of several key players from injury.
Among the biggest highlights was the return of veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone, who practiced for the first time since training camp began. Head coach Dan Campbell mentioned that Anzalone had excelled in the team’s conditioning test, but a hamstring injury had kept him off the field — coupled with ongoing tension over his contract situation.
Joining him in making a return were Ennis Rakestraw (chest), Roy Lopez (foot), Tyleik Williams (personal reasons), Al-Quadin Muhammad, and wide receiver Tim Patrick.
Earlier in the week, Anzalone had voiced his frustration over his contract status. “I’m disappointed in the organization,” he said, as he enters the final year of his deal. He’s due $6 million in base salary this season but believes he’s being underpaid compared to other linebackers in the league.
While several players returned, there were notable absences too — particularly in the secondary. All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph was missing from practice for the first time during this year’s camp, and the reason remains unknown. Ian Kennelly also missed his second straight day.
Joseph is coming off a monster season, where he led the NFL with nine interceptions and landed a massive four-year, $86 million extension — making him the league’s highest-paid safety.
Cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver left Saturday’s session early with what appeared to be a hamstring issue. He had just come off the Non-Football Injury list earlier this week.
The Lions wrapped up their second padded practice and are now looking ahead to their preseason opener on July 31 in the Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers.
