Jared Goff continues to earn respect across the NFL, and his impressive run with the Detroit Lions has now drawn praise from a notable football mind — Jon Gruden.
This past week, Gruden made a visit to Lions training camp, spending time observing the team and chatting with members of the coaching staff. He was especially complimentary of offensive coordinator John Morton, but it was his comments about Goff that really turned heads.
Gruden didn’t hold back when sharing his thoughts on the Lions’ quarterback, drawing a bold comparison to one of the game’s greatest.
“I hate to throw comparisons out,” Gruden said, “but the number, the continuous movement that he plays with — he always reminded me of Montana from the days that I was with the 49ers.”
Yes, that Montana — Joe Montana, the Hall of Famer who won four Super Bowls with the 49ers in the 1980s, earned multiple MVPs, and defined clutch quarterback play for a generation.
Goff has carved out a solid career of his own, making four Pro Bowls (two with the Rams, two with Detroit) and leading the Lions to back-to-back double-digit win seasons. Last year’s 15-2 campaign turned heads across the league.
While Goff still has ground to cover if he hopes to match Montana’s legacy, being mentioned in the same breath is no small thing — and it speaks volumes about the growth of Detroit’s franchise QB.
