When you’re fighting for your NFL dream, sometimes the biggest win is simply getting another shot — and Jacob Saylors is grabbing his latest opportunity with both hands.
The former FCS All-American and 2024 UFL rushing leader has landed in Detroit Lions training camp, and he’s already showing why he belongs. After bouncing between NFL practice squads and starring in the UFL, Saylors, 25, knows every snap could be the one that keeps his dream alive.
Another Chance, Another Chapter
For Saylors, signing with the Lions wasn’t just another transaction. It felt like the perfect fit.
“I’ve had a couple stints in the NFL beforehand, and the biggest difference between here and those other experiences is that I’m getting the opportunity,” Saylors said. “Whether I’m going in there, it’s not perfect, but they’re coaching me up, and that’s the biggest thing that I’m seeing here.”
It’s a refreshing mindset for a player who’s been grinding for his shot. Saylors has stops with the Falcons, Giants, Bengals, and Browns on his resume, but no regular-season games — yet.
UFL Star Hungry for More
After leading the UFL in rushing in 2024 and finishing second in 2025, Saylors has proven he can dominate in a pro setting. But making the jump from the UFL to a crowded NFL backfield is a tall order.
The Lions’ running back room is already deep, with stars like Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery locked into the top roles, and veterans like Craig Reynolds and Sione Vaki battling for spots. But Saylors isn’t backing down.
“I want to show that I can compete on this level. I feel like I’m confident in myself,” he said. “I might not be the guy, but I’m a football player at the end of the day and I feel like there’s some role that I’m here to contribute.”
Familiar Faces, Fresh Motivation
Adding to the comfort level is Lions offensive assistant Bruce Gradkowski — Saylors’ former coach with the UFL’s St. Louis Battlehawks — who’s there to offer familiar guidance and a vote of confidence.
“It’s a comfortable feeling kind of having that safe space with a coach,” Saylors said. “Even today, during practice, just the excitement that he has whenever I do something good, and the way he’s able to coach me up if I do something bad.”
Making His Mark
So far, Saylors is making the most of his reps in camp. He capped off a recent practice with a powerful touchdown run during 11-on-11 drills, showcasing the physicality and hunger that define his game.
And while the preseason clock is ticking, Saylors is staying laser-focused.
“My goal is to come out here every day and be better than I was the last day,” he said. “I’m just grateful that I’m getting those opportunities out here on the practice field.”
As the Lions’ preseason rolls on, Saylors is determined to prove he’s here for a reason — and maybe, just maybe, this time he’ll stick.
