Lions Catch Massive Break Ahead of Monday Night Clash with Buccaneers

The Detroit Lions are still licking their wounds after Sunday night’s 30–17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Jared Goff and the offense never quite found their rhythm, and the defense had no answers for Patrick Mahomes’ magic. But as bad as that loss felt, Detroit’s luck might finally be turning around.

Heading into their Monday Night Football matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions are already catching some huge breaks — and it starts with Tampa’s growing injury list.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Bucs head coach Todd Bowles confirmed that running back Bucky Irving and wide receiver Chris Godwin won’t suit up this week. For a Lions secondary that’s still dealing with injuries of its own, that’s welcome news.

Irving, who’s been battling foot and shoulder issues, has been one of Tampa’s key offensive pieces — logging over 230 rushing yards before going down. Chris Godwin, meanwhile, has struggled to get back to form since his ankle injury last year, and now he’s sidelined again.

But that’s not all. Mike Evans and rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka are also banged up, with Egbuka expected to miss time, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Suddenly, Baker Mayfield’s MVP-level season just got a lot tougher to maintain without his top weapons.

For Detroit, this is a golden opportunity to bounce back. Dan Campbell’s team has a chance to reassert itself under the primetime lights — this time, against a short-handed opponent. The Lions’ defense can breathe a little easier, but they still can’t afford to relax. Mayfield’s been known to make magic happen, even when he’s down to his backups.

Still, with the Bucs limping into Week 7, the Lions couldn’t have asked for a better setup to get back on track.
