After a crushing playoff defeat, Detroit eyes a strategic rebuild for a brighter 2025 season
The Detroit Lions’ 2024 campaign ended abruptly with a 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders in the divisional round. While the disappointment looms large, the offseason provides an opportunity for Lions general manager Brad Holmes to strengthen the roster and address pressing needs in free agency. With several key players set to test the market and uncertainty surrounding the coaching staff, Detroit must act decisively to remain a contender in 2025.
Fortifying the Secondary: Charvarius Ward as a Cornerstone
One of Detroit’s most urgent priorities will be addressing its secondary. Carlton Davis III, a vital leader on defense, is entering free agency, and his potential departure could leave a gaping hole in the Lions’ defensive lineup. Re-signing Davis should be at the top of Holmes’ list, but even if he stays, the Lions should aggressively pursue San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward.
Ward, renowned for his elite man-to-man coverage, would seamlessly complement Davis and create one of the league’s most formidable cornerback tandems. The 49ers will fight to retain Ward, but his personal challenges and a desire for change could work in Detroit’s favor. A move to the Lions could not only enhance their defensive capabilities but also solidify a weak spot exposed during the playoffs.
Shoring Up the Offensive Line: Will Hernandez to the Rescue
The Lions’ offensive line has been a strength in recent years, but changes are imminent. Veteran guard Kevin Zeitler, who played a pivotal role in Detroit’s success, is a free agent. If Holmes cannot bring Zeitler back, the team must explore alternatives, with Arizona Cardinals guard Will Hernandez emerging as an ideal replacement.
Despite missing most of the 2024 season due to injury, Hernandez demonstrated elite performance during his limited appearances, earning high grades from Pro Football Focus. His affordability, coupled with his proven ability to dominate in the trenches, makes him an attractive target. Pairing Hernandez with Detroit’s existing linemen would help maintain their status as one of the NFL’s premier offensive units.
Bolstering the Receiving Corps: A Fresh Start for Diontae Johnson
In a season filled with turbulence, wide receiver Diontae Johnson struggled to find stability, bouncing between three teams in 2024. However, his potential remains undeniable. At just 28 years old, Johnson offers a rare opportunity for the Lions to buy low on a player with high upside.
Known for his precise route running and ability to find separation, Johnson would fit perfectly alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. With offensive coordinator Ben Johnson potentially departing for a head coaching role, adding Johnson’s skill set could help offset the loss of creativity and ensure Detroit’s offense remains dynamic.
Charting a New Course
The Lions’ 2024 season was a testament to their growth, but the heartbreaking playoff loss exposed areas needing improvement. With 23 players hitting free agency, Holmes faces significant challenges, but the opportunities to elevate the team are equally abundant. By targeting proven talents like Ward, Hernandez, and Johnson, Detroit can solidify its roster and position itself for a deeper playoff run in 2025.
While the sting of defeat lingers, the Lions have a strong foundation. By making strategic moves in free agency, Detroit can rise from the ashes of disappointment and continue their march toward NFL supremacy.
