Lions’ Secondary Gets a Boost as Kendall Fuller Exits and Star Corners Return

A Post-Bye Week Shake-Up

Coming off their bye week, the Detroit Lions are reloading their defense — and that means some roster reshuffling. On Monday, the team announced the release of veteran cornerback Kendall Fuller, ending his brief two-week stint with the team before he could even make his debut.

The move came as a surprise to some, but it’s also a sign of good news for Detroit: their secondary is finally getting healthy again.

Fuller’s Short Stay in Motown

Fuller, a Super Bowl champion and former Washington Commanders starter, was brought in to shore up a depleted Lions secondary that had been riddled with injuries. But despite his experience, the 30-year-old corner never cracked the rotation — even as players like Nick Whiteside, Arthur Maulet, and Tre Flowers were called upon from the practice squad.

After battling concussions last season with the Dolphins and missing six games, Fuller’s quest to find stability continues as he looks for another chance elsewhere.

Help Is Finally on the Way

The release, however, paves the way for key returns. Avonte Maddox and rookie standout Terrion Arnold are both expected to return to practice this week, giving the Lions a serious boost in coverage. Add Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch — who’s back from suspension — and suddenly Detroit’s secondary looks far more complete heading into their Week 9 clash with the Vikings.

With a demanding November schedule featuring the Vikings, Commanders, Eagles, and Packers, getting these reinforcements couldn’t have come at a better time.

Next Man Up — Or Out

While Amik Robertson is likely to reclaim his nickel role, players like Whiteside and Maulet have proven their worth and may have earned spots on an active roster — in Detroit or elsewhere. For a unit that’s been patchwork most of the season, that kind of depth is a win in itself.
