Aidan Hutchinson Just Secured His Lions Legacy — But There’s More to This Extension Than You Think

Aidan Hutchinson’s Record Lions Extension Sets New Standard for Non-Quarterbacks

Aidan Hutchinson’s massive contract extension with the Detroit Lions has officially reset the market for defensive players. The deal reportedly includes $141 million in guaranteed money, the most ever for a non-quarterback, according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer via Patrick Andres.

Hutchinson’s new four-year agreement adds $180 million in fresh money to his existing deal, keeping him under contract through 2030. The star pass rusher will collect $45.9 million over the 2025 and 2026 seasons, all fully guaranteed — a figure that includes $25 million in new earnings. His annual payouts rise to $29.55 million in both 2027 and 2028, before jumping to $49.5 million in 2029 and $42 million in 2030.

The structure of the deal includes a $15 million signing bonus and an additional $28.4 million option bonus due this March. In total, $55.7 million is guaranteed at signing, while several future payments become guaranteed as the contract progresses. Specifically, Hutchinson will have $10 million fully guaranteed in 2027, $29.55 million vesting in 2028, and $35.42 million guaranteed in 2029. His 2030 salary, worth $42 million, carries no guarantees.

The agreement also features annual $250,000 workout bonuses and $200,000 in per-game incentives throughout the contract’s duration.

It’s a significant long-term commitment from Detroit’s front office — one that underscores how much the team values its defensive cornerstone. Still, insiders say this move won’t alter the Lions’ short-term approach. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Detroit remains active ahead of the trade deadline, continuing its search for both a cornerback and another pass rusher to bolster the defense.
