Report: Vrabel Wants Lions Coach to Lead Patriots Defense

The New England Patriots are making moves to bolster their coaching staff under newly appointed head coach Mike Vrabel, with Detroit Lions defensive line coach/run game coordinator Terrell Williams emerging as a top candidate for their defensive coordinator role. Williams’ potential hire would reunite him with Vrabel, who he worked closely with during their time together with the Tennessee Titans.

Why Terrell Williams?

Williams has an impressive coaching résumé spanning over two decades, including both college and NFL experience. His ability to develop talent and design effective run defenses has made him one of the league’s most respected defensive line coaches.

  • Strong Track Record: Under Williams’ guidance, the Lions had a stellar 2024 season, finishing fifth in the NFL in yards per attempt (4.33) and 11th in rushing yards per game (182.0).
  • Past Connection with Vrabel: Williams served as the Titans’ defensive line coach from 2018 to 2022 and was promoted to assistant head coach in his final year in Tennessee, reflecting his leadership and trust from Vrabel.

Coaching Philosophy

Williams emphasizes “violence” and effort in his defensive linemen, a philosophy that has shaped elite players like Ndamukong Suh, Richard Seymour, and Jeffery Simmons. His coaching approach has proven effective in molding some of the NFL’s most dominant defensive linemen.

Potential Patriots Fit

Williams’ proven ability to develop players and lead a defensive front aligns with the Patriots’ need to reinforce their defense under Vrabel’s leadership. If hired, he could bring immediate improvements to New England’s defensive schemes and player development.

Other Candidates

The Patriots have also interviewed:

  • Ryan Crow, Miami Dolphins outside linebackers coach, another former Vrabel assistant from Tennessee.
  • Additional candidates for other roles, including former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels for a potential return.

Williams’ combination of experience, results, and compatibility with Vrabel makes him a compelling candidate to help shape the Patriots’ next chapter under their new head coach.
