From Rackets to Touchdowns: This Athlete Has Both Games

OU tennis player Bruno Nhavene has got people talking—not because of his tennis skills (though those are impressive) but because of his massive frame that’s more “football linebacker” than “tennis pro.” A picture of him blew up on X (formerly Twitter), and now Sooner fans can’t stop wondering why he isn’t suiting up for the football team.

Nhavene, a 6-foot-3 junior from Mozambique, sparked a wave of comments after his viral moment. In response, he threw down a challenge: if 500 fans showed up to Sunday’s tennis match, he’d consider trying out for the football team.

Spoiler alert—attendance didn’t hit 500. Still, the buzz around Nhavene brought more attention to Oklahoma’s tennis team, which is ranked 10th in the nation right now. On Sunday, Nhavene stayed undefeated, dominating in doubles and nearly clinching his singles match before it was called.

While it doesn’t seem like he’s trading his racket for football pads anytime soon, fans can’t help but imagine what he’d look like as a Sooner on the gridiron. For now, though, it’s safe to say he’s crushing it in the right sport.

The Sooners tennis team will host the ITA Kickoff Weekend this Saturday and Sunday, facing Tulsa at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Let’s see if Sooner Nation can rally behind tennis—or maybe even push Nhavene closer to that football dream someday.
