Micah Parsons Drops a Surprise Request Before Packers–Lions Thanksgiving Game

The long-running Thanksgiving tradition between the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions continues this year, as the two rivals get ready for their 23rd holiday matchup at Ford Field — the most Thanksgiving Day meetings between any two teams in NFL history.

For Packers defensive end Micah Parsons, the holiday spotlight isn’t new. He has performed well on Thanksgiving in the past, but this time is a bit different. This will be his first Thanksgiving game as a member of the Packers, and he’ll be counted on heavily to slow down Detroit’s explosive offense.

Even with the game still a few days away, Parsons seems to have more than football on his mind. In fact, he already has a specific atmosphere in mind for when he steps onto the Lambeau Field turf.

According to The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman, “(Packers defensive coordinator) Jeff Hafley said Micah Parsons is open to the idea of Lambeau Field playing ‘Enter Sandman’ when he comes on the field to close a game. Parsons doesn’t know anything about baseball, so Hafley educated him on Mariano Rivera.”

For those unfamiliar, Mariano Rivera — the legendary New York Yankees closer — famously used “Enter Sandman” as his entrance music for years. The Metallica classic became a signature part of his identity whenever he took the mound in save situations.

Rivera’s résumé speaks for itself: a 19-year career with the Yankees, five World Series championships, a World Series MVP award, 13 All-Star selections, and multiple seasons leading the league in saves.

Given how iconic Rivera’s entrance became, adopting something similar might just be a perfect fit for Parsons and his new chapter in Green Bay.
