looked like Pete Alonso might be packing his bags for a new team in 2025, but word on the street says the Mets are still one of the favorites to keep their slugger around.
The Mets have had a busy offseason, locking in some key players for their rotation and handing Juan Soto the fattest contract in sports history. But the situation with Alonso, their four-time All-Star first baseman, has been a headache. Talks stalled over contract terms—specifically the number of years—and even though Alonso was open to a short-term deal with opt-outs, the Mets weren’t sold.
At one point, it seemed like the team had moved on. But according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the market for Alonso has been surprisingly quiet, and the Mets may end up being his best option after all.
Heyman said on a recent livestream, “The most likely landing spots right now look like the Mets or Blue Jays. Alonso’s short-term deal with opt-outs could still work, just like it did for guys like Blake Snell and Matt Chapman.”
Other teams, like the Red Sox, Angels, Giants, and Mariners, have been mentioned, but there’s little movement on their end. Plus, the Blue Jays just signed Anthony Santander and might prioritize a new deal for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which could push Alonso further toward staying in New York.
For now, the Mets are expected to shift their focus to relievers. But with so many big names already off the board, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Alonso and the team find their way back to the negotiating table.
It’s been a rollercoaster, but Mets fans might still see their homegrown slugger suiting up in Queens next season.
