Lions’ Amon-Ra St. Brown Aims to Shake Off Ankle Setbacks for Rams Showdown

All-Pro receiver looks to return to California with confidence after recent ankle struggles

Overcoming Adversity

Amon-Ra St. Brown has proven time and again that he can rise to the occasion, even under less-than-ideal circumstances. Most recently, he caught six passes for 92 yards and helped set up two crucial touchdowns, all while nursing a sore ankle.

“I couldn’t really do much early on. I couldn’t run,” St. Brown admitted. “Going into the game, I was a little bit more gassed than I usually was… I was basically off for like two weeks of not practicing. So, a little tired throughout the game.”

Despite the physical limitations, the All-Pro wideout pushed through, starting the game with a 7-yard catch on the very first play from scrimmage. “It felt good to get one under my belt immediately after not practicing, and I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” he said.

Mental Challenges and Strategic Adjustments

St. Brown’s recent struggles were not only physical but also mental. The Lions implemented varied personnel packages to compensate for injuries, including the absence of their top two tight ends. St. Brown navigated this challenge remotely at times, reviewing game plans over FaceTime while away from practice.

“The hardest part for me was just being able to see it on an iPad, then go out there and do it,” he said. “Usually I’m in during the week, repping the plays and getting the physical reps.”

Wide receivers and assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery acknowledged the concern around St. Brown’s status prior to the game, noting he was “critically concerned.” Despite that, the team had plans both with and without him, demonstrating confidence in his ability to step up.

Homecoming in California

With his ankle improving, St. Brown is focused on returning to California for Sunday’s matchup against the NFC’s top-seeded Los Angeles Rams. The game promises a homecoming of sorts, with family, friends, and familiar surroundings cheering him on.

“Big challenge for us going back to LA… I’m excited for it, get to go back home and see some family. It’ll be fun,” St. Brown said. The matchup also carries a nostalgic element for him, recalling his college days at USC and past encounters in the same stadium with quarterback Jared Goff. “Just kind of funny how we played in the same stadium before we were together and now we still play in the same stadium together,” he reflected.

A Formidable Opponent

The Rams, while home to a potent offense, also boast a stingy defense. They rank sixth in the league with 36 sacks, hold a top-10 position against both the run and pass, and have allowed just four rushing touchdowns this season. With 13 interceptions creating key takeaways, St. Brown knows this won’t be an easy trip.

“They’re a good team… it’s going to be a good matchup,” he said. But even with the challenge, he remains eager to take the field, putting his ankle setbacks behind him and focusing on helping the Lions secure a win.
