A Brutal Surprise in Detroit That Has Lions Fans Questioning Everything

For a team that’s spent the last couple of seasons rebuilding trust with its fanbase, the latest move by the Detroit Lions landed with a thud.

When news broke that Detroit had hired Drew Petzing as its new offensive coordinator, the reaction wasn’t just surprise—it was brutal. Fans didn’t ease into skepticism. They dove straight into disbelief.

And honestly? You can see why.

A Quick Goodbye, a Quick Replacement

The Lions have been searching for a new offensive coordinator since letting go of John Morton on January 6, after just one season. Morton didn’t stay unemployed long—he quickly linked back up with Sean Payton as a consultant with the Denver Broncos.

Then came January 19.

NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that Detroit was turning to Petzing, most recently the offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.

That’s when the head-scratching started.

The Numbers Don’t Tell a Simple Story

On paper, Petzing’s résumé isn’t a total disaster—but it isn’t a slam dunk either.

NFL writer Kevin Patra summed it up best, calling it “a mixed bag for Petzing’s offenses in the desert.” In 2024, his Cardinals offense ranked top-eight with a 0.3 EPA per play. One year later, injuries piled up, consistency vanished, and Arizona dropped to 24th in EPA per play at -0.6.

Patra added, “With zero running game, the Cards became a pass-happy offense with backup Jacoby Brissett under center.”

Fair context—but context rarely cools hot fan reactions.

Fans Let Their Feelings Fly

Once Dianna Russini relayed on X that a source told Mike Silver Petzing was “being hired by the Lions,” the replies turned ruthless.

“Not a single Lions fan or non Lions fans thinks this is a good hire. Convince me otherwise?” one user wrote.

“Poverty move,” another added.

A Bears fan even chimed in with, “Such a horrible hire lmao, I’m for it.”

That’s never a good sign.

Not Everyone Thinks It’s a Disaster

Amid the outrage, a few cooler heads stepped in.

ESPN’s Benjamin Solak pushed back on the outrage, saying, “This is an extremely fine hire. Petzing was largely more good than bad in Arizona.” He also pointed out Detroit’s advantage up front, noting that the Lions already have offensive line coach Hank Fraley in place.

Writer Jon Ledyard struck a middle ground: “I’m very surprised the Lions didn’t land someone with more pedigree than Petzing… But if he plans to bring some of the 2024 Cardinals run game plan to Detroit, I can see the vision.”

That “vision,” though, remains theoretical.

A Gamble That Will Define Trust

NFL Trade Rumors’ Logan Ulrich called the hire “a fairly big surprise,” especially given how many big names were linked to the vacancy.

And that’s the core issue. The Lions felt like a destination job. Fans expected a splash—or at least a safer bet. Instead, Detroit chose someone few saw coming.

Now, it’s on Petzing—and head coach Dan Campbell—to turn a brutal surprise into a smart one. Until then, Lions fans are left doing what they do best in moments like this: questioning everything, loudly.
