The Detroit Lions are deep in the middle of offseason changes, but the organization recently shared an important update that will directly impact the team’s plans for the upcoming season.
As the NFL moves through free agency, Detroit confirmed new details surrounding its position in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft — including an additional compensatory draft selection that gives the team more flexibility when building the roster.
For a team looking to rebound after a difficult season, every extra draft asset matters.
Lions Add a Valuable Compensatory Draft Pick
The biggest announcement is that Detroit has been awarded a fifth-round compensatory pick, giving the team another opportunity to add talent during the draft.
Compensatory picks are awarded by the NFL based on a formula that considers several factors, including:
Free agents lost versus players signed
Contract values of departing players
Playing time and postseason honors
Because Detroit lost more qualifying free agents than it added last year, the team earned the extra selection.
With the compensatory pick included, the Lions now hold eight total picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, giving general manager Brad Holmes several chances to strengthen the roster.
Detroit’s Current 2026 Draft Picks
Here is the full list of Detroit’s draft selections:
Round 1: Pick 17
Round 2: Pick 50 overall
Round 4: Pick 118
Round 5: Pick 157
Round 5: Pick 181 (compensatory pick)
Round 6: Pick 205 (via Jaguars)
Round 6: Pick 213 (via Seahawks through Jaguars)
Round 7: Pick 222 (via Browns)
The 2026 NFL Draft will take place April 23–25 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Detroit will enter the event with multiple chances to add depth and potential starters.
Dan Campbell Still Believes in the Core of the Team
Despite a frustrating season that ended with the Lions finishing last in the NFC North, head coach Dan Campbell remains confident in the foundation of the roster.
After Detroit’s final win of the season against the Chicago Bears, Campbell made it clear that he still believes the team has the right core in place.
According to Campbell, the players continued to compete even after being eliminated from playoff contention — something he believes says a lot about the team’s character.
At the same time, he acknowledged that changes will be necessary to get the Lions back into contention.
A Big Offseason Still Ahead
Detroit’s roster could still change significantly in the coming weeks.
Between free agency, potential trades, and the draft, the Lions have multiple avenues to improve the team before the new season begins.
With eight draft picks and several roster needs to address, the upcoming draft could play a major role in determining how quickly Detroit returns to competing in the NFC.
For now, the Lions have officially added another piece of draft capital — and that extra pick could end up becoming an important building block for the future. 🦁🏈
