As the Detroit Lions turn the page on a strong season, one of the brightest spots was their backfield duo of David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. Despite the season ending on a sour note, the Lions’ running game shined in 2024, with both backs setting franchise records and ranking among the NFL’s best.
Montgomery and Gibbs combined for 2,188 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns, with Gibbs posting a career-high 1,412 rushing yards — good for fifth in the league. Montgomery, despite an MCL injury that kept him out for three games, rushed for 775 yards and 12 touchdowns, contributing significantly to the Lions’ historic 29 rushing touchdowns in a season. Gibbs also led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns, tying with Derrick Henry and James Cook.
The Lions’ backfield wasn’t just productive in raw numbers; it was also efficient. Detroit’s 146.6 rushing yards per game was solid, and their 2,488 total yards marked their best performance since 1997. Montgomery’s selflessness in sharing carries with Gibbs helped both backs excel. Gibbs’ breakout year allowed the team to see the depth of their backfield, with Montgomery stepping aside late in the season to let Gibbs take the lead role.
Looking ahead, the Lions face some decisions with their depth. Craig Reynolds, a restricted free agent, has shown promise, and there’s potential for Jermar Jefferson to step up. Detroit might look to improve their third-back position through free agency, or even give rookie Sione Vaki a chance.
The question for next season is whether Detroit leans even more heavily on Gibbs, who could emerge as the feature back given his stellar performance when Montgomery was sidelined. The Lions’ backfield, with its balance and depth, remains one of the most dangerous in the NFL.
