Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown recently shared a wild story about how he found out his position coach, Antwaan Randle El, was leaving to join the Chicago Bears coaching staff.
Last week, St. Brown reacted to offensive coordinator Ben Johnson taking the head coaching role with the Bears. This week on his podcast, the young receiver opened up about Randle El’s departure to become Chicago’s wide receivers coach and assistant head coach — and how he accidentally uncovered the news.
St. Brown explained that the whole thing started while he was simply reflecting on his coaching staff. Suddenly, it hit him: Randle El was from Chicago. Acting on a hunch, he decided to send a playful message in a group chat that included the Lions’ receivers and their coach.
“I hit up the group chat, I go, ‘El, ain’t you from Chicago?’” St. Brown recalled. “I sent that. Next one. ‘You following Ben?’”
What happened next caught him completely off guard. Just two minutes later, his phone rang.
“He said, ‘What’s up, man?’ Then he asked, ‘Hey man. How’d you know? Did that get leaked?’ I said, ‘Nah, I was just messing around.’”
To St. Brown’s surprise, his casual joke turned out to be true. Randle El was indeed joining the Bears for a new role. Despite the unexpected nature of the conversation, St. Brown expressed his happiness for his coach and acknowledged that the move made perfect sense.
“I get it,” he said. “He’s from Chicago, too. So, it’s a step up. He gets to be receivers coach, knows the offense, knows Ben. It just makes sense for him. I’m not upset about it. I’m happy for him. It’s just funny how it all went down.”
Currently, there’s no official word on who will fill Randle El’s role with the Lions. Assistant wide receivers coach Seth Ryan and new offensive coordinator John Morton, who has extensive experience coaching receivers, could both be in the mix.
