Julian Edelman recently took a shot at Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers, calling their defensive scheme predictable and outdated.
During an appearance on Inside the NFL, Edelman recalled how easy it was to pick apart Pittsburgh’s defense during his time with the Patriots.
“You knew exactly what they were doing every time, and they still do what they do. They still do the same — —- —- that when I was playing. I’m like, ‘We still have linebackers covering the three slot?’ Every time I played the Steelers, I had at least nine catches.”
While Edelman exaggerated a bit—he finished with 34 catches in six career games against Pittsburgh—his point still stands. The Steelers’ defensive scheme under Tomlin has long been criticized for being too rigid, especially against quarterbacks like Tom Brady who excel at dissecting zone coverage.
