Lions Hire Former Stanford Coach David Shaw as Passing Game Coordinator
The Detroit Lions are making significant moves to strengthen their offense after losing former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears. On January 30, 2025, the team announced that former Stanford head coach David Shaw will join as their new passing game coordinator. Shaw, a highly respected figure in the coaching world, takes over the role previously held by Tanner Engstrand, who is reportedly a candidate for the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator position.
Shaw’s extensive coaching background includes 16 years as Stanford’s head coach, where he earned four Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. He also has NFL experience with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens. Most recently, Shaw served as a senior personnel executive with the Denver Broncos, which connects him with Lions’ new offensive coordinator John Morton.
Shaw’s arrival marks an important step in helping quarterback Jared Goff bounce back from a rough playoff performance. Despite throwing three interceptions in the Lions’ divisional loss to the Washington Commanders, Goff had a solid 2024 season overall, throwing for 4,629 yards, 37 touchdowns, and completing 72.4% of his passes. Lions fans are hopeful that Shaw’s expertise will further elevate Goff’s game, especially as the Lions aim for a stronger 2025 season.
