Bears Sign Former Lions Receiver Maurice Alexander to Futures Contract
The Chicago Bears continue to build connections to Ben Johnson’s offense, this time adding a former Detroit Lions practice squad player, Maurice Alexander, to their roster. Alexander, a 28-year-old slot receiver, signed a futures contract with the Bears on Friday, despite free agency not officially starting until March 10.
At 5-foot-11, 174 pounds, Alexander has had a limited role in the NFL, playing in seven games for the Lions across the 2022 and 2024 seasons. Before joining Detroit, he spent time in the USFL, where he impressed with 20 catches for 234 yards. Alexander’s versatility showed up on special teams, as he averaged 24.3 yards on six kick returns in 2022, including a long of 47 yards, and 10.5 yards on four punt returns in 2024.
This signing bolsters the Bears’ return game, which has been in need of stability after DeAndre Carter’s injury in December. Carter, who averaged 31.9 yards on kick returns in 2024, was a key player in the return game but was working on a one-year deal.
Alexander’s familiarity with Johnson’s offensive system could provide the Bears with another reliable option in both the return game and as a depth piece at receiver.
