Detroit Car Dealer Faces Legal Heat for Rapping Eminem’s Tune in Ads

A Detroit car dealership is in hot water after allegedly using Eminem’s hit song Lose Yourself in their ads—without permission. The rapper’s music publisher, Eight Mile Style, has filed a lawsuit against LaFontaine Ford St. Clair, claiming the dealership used the track in online promotions for special edition Detroit Lions F-150 trucks.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court, argues that the dealership “blatantly disregarded” the publisher’s exclusive rights. The ad in question, which ran from September to October 2024, featured Lose Yourself alongside the caption: “You only get one shot to own a Special Edition Detroit Lions F-150.” Sound familiar? That’s because it’s a play on the song’s famous lyrics.

Eight Mile Style wants at least $150,000 in damages and is asking the court to order the dealership to stop using the track. The legal team argues that unauthorized use like this diminishes the song’s value for future licensing deals.

This isn’t the first time Lose Yourself has been at the center of a copyright battle. Back in 2017, Eminem’s team successfully sued New Zealand’s National Party for using a track that closely resembled the song in a campaign ad. That case ended with a payout of NZ$600,000 (about £314,000 at the time).

LaFontaine Ford St. Clair has yet to comment on the lawsuit. Meanwhile, Eminem has been making headlines with his latest album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grâce)—which critics say might finally put his alter ego to rest for good.
