There’s been some chatter about Hendon Hooker’s future with the Detroit Lions, but it’s been pretty quickly shut down. The 27-year-old quarterback, who’s midway through his four-year rookie deal, isn’t really expected to get a shot at starting anytime soon—especially with Jared Goff locked in through 2028.
The Lions have shown they’re not too confident in Hooker stepping in if needed, especially with moves like looking into Daniel Jones and signing Teddy Bridgewater late in the season. In fact, Bridgewater was the backup over Hooker during the playoffs against the Commanders.
That’s why ESPN’s Bill Barnwell floated the idea that Hooker might be a cut candidate this offseason, though some think he could still be tradeable, even if he’s likely only worth a Day 3 draft pick.
Despite that, it looks like Hooker’s future is still in Detroit. SI.com’s John Maakaron reported that those close to Hooker expect him to stick around and continue developing in Detroit. Plus, new offensive coordinator John Morton is reportedly pretty intrigued by the quarterbacks on the roster, including Hooker.
So, while the idea of trading Hooker might sound possible, for now, it’s looking like he’s staying put with the Lions.
