Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff recently shared his initial thoughts on the changes within the team’s coaching staff, specifically regarding the departure of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the hiring of John Morton as the new offensive coordinator.
Goff expressed his disappointment at losing Johnson, with whom he had developed a strong relationship. Johnson, who left the Lions to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, played a significant role in Goff’s development. “He’s a hell of a coach. He’s a guy that’s made a ton of difference in my career,” Goff said. “I’m obviously a big fan of his. I was joking with him. I wish he didn’t have to be in our division so I didn’t have to try to beat him twice a year, but, no, he’s going to do a great job.” Despite the rivalry now between the two teams, Goff made it clear that he will always support Johnson.
Looking ahead to the future, Goff shared his thoughts on Morton, who has a prior working relationship with him. Morton served as the Lions’ senior offensive assistant in 2022, the same year Detroit overhauled its offense. Goff expressed confidence in his new coordinator, saying, “We were together in 2022, he was an assistant on our staff, and has done it before… He’s been a coordinator before, has a lot of experience in our league, been around a lot of great coaches. I’m excited to work with him and see where we can go.”
Although the Lions’ new coaching staff is yet to speak with the media, Goff’s optimism about Morton’s experience and leadership suggests a positive outlook for the team’s offense in 2025. The Lions are expected to make their new coaches available during the NFL Combine week, which runs from February 27 to March 2.
