After a season that started with Super Bowl hopes but ended in a tough playoff loss, the Detroit Lions might look to reload instead of just tweaking things.
One area they really struggled with was pass rushing, especially after their star player, Aidan Hutchinson, got injured with a fractured leg in October. But now, the Lions might have a shot at adding one of the league’s top edge rushers. According to some insiders, the Lions are among the top teams that could land Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns after he publicly asked for a trade.
The Lions Have a Chance to Help Hutchinson Detroit has been trying to find a solid pass-rushing partner for Hutchinson through both free agency and the NFL Draft, but so far, those efforts haven’t panned out. Now, Bryan Murphy from The Sporting News thinks they might go for Garrett, especially after rumors had them interested in the NFL’s reigning Defensive Player of the Year at the trade deadline.
Murphy pointed out that the Lions had a tough time with their pass rush last season, only getting 37 sacks, which was 23rd in the league, and the fewest among playoff teams. Hutchinson’s injury played a big part, but their lack of depth was exposed once he was out. Bringing in Garrett would give them what could be the most powerful pass-rush duo in the league, solving one of their biggest weaknesses.
Myles Garrett Wants Out of Cleveland Garrett made headlines this week by publicly asking to be traded. He said he wants to join a team where he can compete for a Super Bowl. In a statement, Garrett expressed how tough it was to leave Cleveland, where he’s spent his whole career, but his desire to win on the biggest stage is driving him to seek a new destination.
He shared, “My love for the community of Northeast Ohio and the incredible fanbase of the Cleveland Browns has made this one of the toughest decisions of my life. These past eight years have shaped me into the man that I am today… The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.”
While there will likely be a lot of teams vying for Garrett, the Lions are in a great position to contend for a Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills are also in the mix, and both teams could offer similar trade packages, including late first-round picks. It’s rumored that landing Garrett could cost multiple first-round picks, similar to what the Bears gave up when they traded for Khalil Mack from the Oakland Raiders.
