Trump pauses tariffs on Mexico and Canada

Just hours before they were set to take effect, Donald Trump hit the brakes on sweeping tariffs against Mexico and Canada.

Over the weekend, Trump announced major tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, saying they were necessary to crack down on fentanyl and illegal immigration. The move sparked concerns about a growing trade war.

But in a last-minute shift, Trump and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum struck a deal to delay the tariffs for a month while both sides hold trade and security talks. A similar agreement was reached with Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

According to the Financial Times, Trudeau agreed to send 10,000 border personnel to help stop fentanyl trafficking in exchange for the US holding off on its planned 25% tariffs.

While this deal avoids an immediate trade war, it raises big questions about the future of US-Canada-Mexico trade relations, especially after decades of closely linked supply chains.
