Los Angeles Looks to Move On from Star Receiver
The Los Angeles Rams are actively seeking a trade partner for wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and they’re reportedly willing to absorb part of his contract to facilitate a deal. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Rams are open to covering some of the financial burden, making Kupp a more attractive option for potential suitors.
Breaking Down Kupp’s Contract Situation
Kupp is set to earn $20 million in 2025, including a $12.5 million base salary and a $7.5 million roster bonus due on March 17. Of that roster bonus, $5 million was already fully guaranteed in 2024.
If the Rams trade him before June 1, they’ll take on a $17.26 million dead cap hit in 2025, freeing up future salary cap space for free agency and the draft. However, if they wait until after June 1, they can spread $7.48 million of dead money into 2026. While that would provide short-term relief, it would also mean covering Kupp’s 2025 roster bonus, making the delay less beneficial.
Given these financial considerations, the Rams prefer to move Kupp before the new league year begins in March. By absorbing part of his contract, they hope to widen his trade market and secure valuable draft capital.
Potential Landing Spots for Kupp
Despite injuries in recent seasons, Kupp remains a dynamic and intelligent playmaker. Several teams are reportedly interested, with Fowler mentioning the Steelers, Commanders, and Patriots as potential fits.
Pittsburgh Steelers – The Steelers were linked to Kupp at the 2024 trade deadline and could revisit the opportunity to add a veteran presence for their offense.
Washington Commanders – With ample cap space and a young quarterback to develop, Washington could benefit from Kupp’s reliability as a target.
New England Patriots – The Patriots, also flush with cap space, are looking to rebuild their offense and could use a proven playmaker like Kupp.
Detroit Lions – The Lions have financial flexibility and a familiar face in Jared Goff, who was Kupp’s quarterback when both played for the Rams.
