No Sugarcoating: Cowboys Star Shares True Feelings on Schottenheimer

The Dallas Cowboys decided to move on from Mike McCarthy and explored several options for their next head coach—including Deion Sanders. But in the end, they made a less flashy choice, promoting Brian Schottenheimer, their offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

A lot of Cowboys fans aren’t thrilled about the decision, but All-Pro guard Zach Martin is backing Schottenheimer all the way.

“I love it. He’s great… He’s obviously made an impression on a lot of people in that building. I’m excited for him to get this opportunity. He’s hungry to be a head coach,” Martin told The Athletic’s Jon Machota.

Dallas has a lot to fix after finishing 7-10 and missing the playoffs, but getting the right head coach is step one.

Schottenheimer has been in the NFL coaching world for over 20 years, previously serving as an offensive coordinator for the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks before landing in Dallas. Now, at 51, he’s getting his first shot as a head coach.

Football runs in his blood—his father, Marty Schottenheimer, was a head coach in the NFL for 21 seasons with teams like the Browns, Chiefs, and Chargers.

For Schottenheimer to have a real shot at success, the Cowboys need to upgrade their roster—especially at running back and on the interior defensive line.
