Could Cooper Kupp Be on His Way to Detroit?
While most Lions fans are focusing on Myles Garrett and his trade request, there’s another intriguing name making waves: Cooper Kupp. The veteran wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams recently took to social media, announcing that the team plans to trade him this offseason. Kupp expressed his disbelief but said he’s ready to embrace the situation and move forward.
Now, could Detroit be a surprise contender in the Kupp trade sweepstakes?
ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler recently mentioned on SportsCenter that Detroit might be one of the teams looking into Kupp’s availability. He pointed out that Kupp and Jared Goff have a history together, having shared four seasons in Los Angeles, which could create instant chemistry if they were reunited in Detroit. However, this is still purely speculative—Fowler noted that the teams he mentioned were just “early teams people are bantering about.”
But here’s where it gets interesting: Kupp still has a hefty contract. He’s set to earn $12.5 million in 2025, plus a $7.5 million roster bonus. That’s a $20 million cap hit, and though the Rams may be willing to eat some of that salary, it’s still a pretty big pill to swallow for any team—especially one with plenty of other priorities, like Detroit.
The Lions do have some cap flexibility, but with a solid receiving corps already in place and a pressing need to strengthen the defense (with key free agents like Carlton Davis and Levi Onwuzurike looming), trading for Kupp might not be the most efficient move for the Lions. They could likely bring back Tim Patrick at a much cheaper price and focus their money elsewhere to maintain a potent offense and shore up the defense.
What do you think, Lions fans? Is Cooper Kupp a trade target worth pursuing, or should Detroit stick to other areas of the roster?
