President Donald Trump has suggested that the US should “take over” the Gaza Strip and relocate the Palestinian population while it’s being rebuilt. Trump made the comments during a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Tuesday, February 4.
Trump stated that his plan would “supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area” and transform Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” He emphasized that the US would “own” the Gaza Strip and be responsible for dismantling unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site.
According to Trump, the 1.8 million Palestinians currently living in Gaza should move to nearby countries with “humanitarian hearts” and “great wealth.” However, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected Trump’s idea, expressing “strong rejection of calls to seize the Gaza Strip and displace Palestinians outside their homeland.”
Abbas’s office stated that “legitimate Palestinian rights are not negotiable,” and emphasized that Gaza “is an integral part of the State of Palestine.” Rewaa Mohsen, a nurse in Gaza, also criticized Trump’s comments, saying that “we will not move one meter away from our land.”
Trump’s remarks sparked outrage from senators, including Foreign Relations Committee member Chris Coons, who called the idea “insane.” Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib also criticized Trump’s comments, stating that “Palestinians aren’t going anywhere.”
