Mets and Pete Alonso Settle the Score: Polar Bear Will Stay in New York

It’s official: Pete Alonso is sticking with the Mets! After weeks of talks, the first baseman and the team have agreed on a two-year, $54 million deal, with a $10 million signing bonus. The contract has a player option for a second year at $24 million.

Alonso’s decision came down to a two-year versus three-year deal, and he chose the shorter term. The move ensures the 30-year-old slugger will remain with the Mets at least through next season.

With Alonso back, the Mets are looking like one of the most intimidating lineups in baseball. Here’s a look at their 2025 roster:

Francisco Lindor, SS

Juan Soto, RF

Pete Alonso, 1B

Brandon Nimmo, LF

Mark Vientos, 3B

Starling Marte, DH

Jeff McNeil, 2B

Tyrone Taylor, CF

Francisco Alvarez, C

Alonso’s proven he can thrive in New York, with a career that includes 226 home runs and 586 RBIs in his six seasons with the Mets. He’s also just 26 home runs away from tying Darryl Strawberry’s franchise record for homers (252). The Mets are confident he’ll break it this year, cementing his place as one of the best power hitters in team history.

Owner Steve Cohen is showing his loyalty to homegrown players, hoping Alonso’s success will bring even more milestones to the Mets. There’s a chance Alonso’s No. 20 could someday join the ranks of retired Mets numbers alongside the likes of Strawberry, Piazza, Seaver, and others.

Looks like Pete’s not going anywhere!
