David Montgomery: Lions’ RB Duo Aiming to Be NFL’s Best of All Time
The Detroit Lions may have landed one of the most memorable nicknames for a backfield with “Sonic and Knuckles,” but star running back David Montgomery believes he and Jahmyr Gibbs are much more than just a catchy title.
During an appearance on NFL Network, Montgomery sat down with former NFL fullback Mike Robinson to discuss his partnership with Gibbs. Robinson didn’t hold back in his praise, labeling the pair the “best duo of running backs in the National Football League.” Montgomery didn’t shy away from the bold assessment, taking it a step further.
“(We’re) definitely the best running back duo in the league,” Montgomery confidently declared. “But me and Jahmyr—that’s my dog. You’ve got to be in a headspace where you can be selfless enough to celebrate someone else’s success. A lot of people forget we’re all competitors, and we all want to be the guy. But sometimes, you’ve got to set that aside for the greater good of the team.”
He emphasized the special connection between him and Gibbs. “Being able to team up with somebody of Jahmyr’s caliber and do it together is super special. When it’s all said and done, I truly believe we’ll be the best running back duo to ever play together,” Montgomery stated confidently.
It’s a lofty claim, but the numbers back up the hype. Over the past two seasons, Montgomery and Gibbs have racked up a combined 4,147 rushing yards and 51 touchdowns.
A crucial piece of their success was the Lions’ former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who has since left to become head coach of their division rival, the Chicago Bears.
To fill that void, the Lions hired John Morton, a Michigan native who previously served as Denver Broncos’ passing game coordinator. Morton isn’t a stranger to Detroit, having been a senior offensive assistant on Dan Campbell’s staff in 2022.
Though Montgomery didn’t work with Morton last season, he has high hopes for their collaboration.
“I’ve heard a lot of good things about him,” Montgomery shared. “Coach Campbell and Brad do a great job of bringing the right people into our culture. I trust that decision 100 percent.”
Montgomery’s confidence in both his backfield chemistry with Gibbs and the Lions’ coaching staff suggests that the duo is determined to prove they can leave a lasting legacy in the NFL.
