Detroit Lions Set to Interview Darren Sproles for Coaching Role
Former NFL star could bring his all-purpose expertise to Detroit
Lions Expanding Their Coaching Staff
The Detroit Lions are actively working to fill key coaching vacancies after losing seven assistant coaches this offseason. With new coordinators John Morton and Kelvin Sheppard taking charge, the team is reshaping its staff to maintain momentum from its recent success.
One of the latest names linked to the Lions’ coaching search is former NFL running back Darren Sproles. According to Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports/CBS Sports, Sproles is expected to interview for a role on the Lions’ coaching staff. While he has been a personnel consultant for the Philadelphia Eagles since 2020, he is now looking to transition into a coaching position.
Darren Sproles’ Legendary Playing Career
Sproles defied expectations throughout his 15-year NFL career, playing for the San Diego Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Philadelphia Eagles. Despite being undersized, he established himself as one of the most dynamic all-purpose backs in league history.
A three-time Pro Bowler (2014-2016), Sproles set the NFL single-season record for all-purpose yards in 2011 with 2,696— a mark that still stands today. He finished his career with 3,552 rushing yards, 4,480 receiving yards, 11,313 kick and punt return yards, and 62 total touchdowns.
Potential Role with the Lions
While the exact position Sproles would fill remains unclear, Detroit could use his expertise in multiple ways. The Lions did not have an assistant running backs coach last season under Scottie Montgomery, but they have had one in previous years. Given Sproles’ experience as a versatile playmaker, his influence could be invaluable for Detroit’s backfield.
Impact on Lions’ Running Backs
If hired, Sproles could be a key mentor for rising star Jahmyr Gibbs and veteran David Montgomery. His experience as a dual-threat back would be particularly beneficial for Gibbs, who thrives in both the running and passing game. Additionally, 2024 fourth-round pick Sione Vaki could develop under Sproles’ guidance, learning how to maximize his all-purpose skills.
A Promising Addition for Detroit
Although Sproles never played alongside Lions head coach Dan Campbell in New Orleans, his wealth of knowledge and experience make him a compelling candidate. If the interview goes well, Detroit could soon add one of the most respected all-purpose players in NFL history to its coaching staff.
