Once a Lion, Now on the Big Stage: Former Detroit Players in Super Bowl 59

As the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs prepare for Super Bowl 59, a few familiar faces from Detroit will be taking part in the big game. Four former Detroit Lions players are on the rosters, with two on the active squad and two on practice squads.

Eagles cornerback Darius Slay and safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson will suit up on game day, while defensive lineman Charles Harris (Eagles) and tight end Anthony Firkser (Chiefs)are part of their teams’ practice squads. Slay, a five-time Pro Bowler, has played a key leadership role in mentoring young Eagles defensive backs, including rookies Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean.

Slay’s impact on and off the field has been widely praised, with Eagles secondary coach Christian Parker calling him a “phenomenal teammate” who embraces the role of mentoring younger players. Rookie corner Quinyon Mitchell echoed the sentiment, crediting Slay for helping him adjust to the NFL.

While their time in Detroit has passed, these former Lions will now try to make an impact on football’s biggest stage. Will one of them walk away with a championship ring? We’ll find out on Super Bowl Sunday!
