As the Pittsburgh Steelers concluded their 2024 NFL season, safety DeShon Elliott sat down for his exit interview, offering insights into his inaugural year with the team and his vision for the future.
Reflecting on the Season
Elliott, who joined the Steelers in March 2024 on a two-year, $6 million deal, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play in Pittsburgh. “This organization embodies championship football and a gritty, smash-mouth culture,” Elliott remarked during his introductory press conference. “It’s real football, and I’m excited to be part of it.”
Throughout the season, Elliott’s physical style of play complemented the Steelers’ defensive scheme. His versatility allowed star safety Minkah Fitzpatrick to return to his natural playmaking role, a strategic move that benefited the team’s overall defensive performance.
Building Chemistry and Leadership
Off the field, Elliott emphasized the importance of building relationships with his teammates. He highlighted efforts to bond with fellow safety Fitzpatrick through shared meals and workouts, aiming to develop seamless on-field chemistry. “Eventually, I want to mesh like peanut butter and jelly, and I think we will,” Elliott stated.
Elliott also expressed admiration for head coach Mike Tomlin, noting, “He is the most credible head coach in the NFL. Since I’ve been in the league, everybody wants to play for him, and now being here, I see why.”
Looking Ahead
As he looks toward the 2025 season, Elliott is focused on continuous improvement and contributing to the team’s success. He remains committed to the Steelers’ culture of excellence and is eager to build upon the foundation established during his first year in Pittsburgh.
“Each day, you find something to be better at for your skillset,” Elliott said. “I just think right now everybody is eager to be better, and it frustrates us when we aren’t at our best. But with that mindset, we can be great.”
Elliott’s dedication to the team’s ethos and his proactive approach to leadership position him as a key contributor to the Steelers’ future endeavors.
