Kellen Moore to Lead New Orleans After Super Bowl-Winning Run
Kellen Moore, a former backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions, is on the verge of finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints. This marks a significant milestone in his coaching career, which has seen a rapid rise from the sidelines to one of the most coveted leadership roles in the NFL.
From Backup Quarterback to NFL Head Coach
Moore’s journey to New Orleans is a testament to perseverance and football intelligence. Though he never played a game for the Lions during his three-season stint as Matthew Stafford’s backup, he absorbed valuable lessons that shaped his coaching philosophy.
Reflecting on his time in Detroit, Moore shared with the Detroit Free Press, “I was around some great coaches, some great people in Detroit, my first experience in the NFL. It was so much fun. So much fun. We had our challenges. We got to the playoffs one year. You learn from each and every one of those guys.”
After Detroit, Moore moved on to the Dallas Cowboys, where he finished his playing career and transitioned into coaching as the team’s quarterbacks coach. He later took over as offensive coordinator in Dallas before holding the same role with the Los Angeles Chargers and, most recently, the Philadelphia Eagles.
A New Era in New Orleans
NFL Network reports that Moore has already informed the Philadelphia Eagles—where he helped orchestrate a Super Bowl-winning offense—that he will be departing for New Orleans. The Saints have also communicated their decision to other candidates, making Moore’s hiring all but official.
His arrival signals a new direction for the Saints, who are looking to regain their dominance in the NFC South. Known for his innovative offensive schemes, Moore could provide the spark the team needs to revitalize its attack and build a contender.
The Coaching Carousel Comes to a Halt
Moore’s hiring in New Orleans is one of several major coaching moves following the Super Bowl. The Detroit Lions, for instance, lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators—Ben Johnson is now leading the Chicago Bears, while Aaron Glenn has taken over as the head coach of the New York Jets.
Other notable hires include:
- Mike Vrabel – New England Patriots
- Brian Schottenheimer – Dallas Cowboys
- Pete Carroll – Las Vegas Raiders
- Liam Coen – Jacksonville Jaguars
With Moore now in place for the Saints, the 2025 coaching cycle officially comes to a close. The spotlight now shifts to the field, where Moore will face the challenge of transforming New Orleans into a championship contender.
