Matt Patricia Joins Ohio State as Defensive Coordinator—A Fresh Start After NFL Struggles
Former Detroit Lions head coach Matt Patricia is heading back to the sidelines, but this time at the college level. According to reports, Patricia has been hired as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State, marking his first coaching role since spending the 2024 season out of football.
Patricia’s Coaching Journey
After his failed tenure in Detroit (2018-2020), where he posted a 13-29-1 record, Patricia returned to the New England Patriots in a hybrid role before spending 2023 with the Philadelphia Eagles as a senior defensive assistant. Now, he joins an Ohio State team that, despite winning the 2024 national championship, has been struggling against Michigan, losing their last four matchups.
Lions & Wolverines Fans Take Notice
For Lions fans—especially those who also support Michigan—Patricia’s return will bring mixed emotions. While his success as a defensive coordinator in New England earned him a strong reputation, his tenure in Detroit was defined by locker room issues and poor results. Now, he’ll have to prove he can develop and connect with college players.
Ohio State visits Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2025, meaning Patricia will once again find himself on the wrong side of the rivalry in the eyes of many Detroit fans. Whether he can help turn the tide for the Buckeyes remains to be seen.
