Bears’ Biggest Offseason Need: Offensive Line Overhaul
With the arrival of head coach Ben Johnson, hopes are high for the Chicago Bears’ future, mirroring the offensive resurgence the Detroit Lions experienced under his leadership. While much attention has been on the Bears’ need for a running back—much like the Lions’ success with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs—the real priority this offseason will be fixing the offensive line.
As Adam Jahns from The Athletic pointed out, the Bears’ offensive line has been neglected during general manager Ryan Poles’ tenure, and Johnson is unlikely to let that trend continue into his fourth season. A major issue that needs addressing is pass protection; Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked a staggering 68 times during his rookie season, underscoring the urgency to stabilize the line.
Several key players, including Coleman Shelton, Teven Jenkins, and Matt Pryor, are set to hit free agency, and it’s expected that none will return as starters. Jenkins, in particular, has dealt with durability issues, making it unlikely the team will offer him a multi-year contract. The Bears may look to bring in up to three new starters, and Ryan Bates, who could serve as important depth, is likely to remain on the roster.
While the Bears will likely add a running back in the draft, fixing the offensive line is now at the forefront of their offseason agenda.
