Will the Detroit Lions Trade Hendon Hooker This Offseason?
As the Detroit Lions gear up for the 2025 offseason, there’s no doubt that Jared Goff will remain their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. However, the backup quarterback situation is far less certain, especially with veteran Teddy Bridgewater set to enter free agency. This uncertainty has sparked speculation that the Lions might consider moving on from Hendon Hooker, their 2023 third-round draft pick.
Question Marks Around the Backup Role
Bridgewater was brought in late last season to serve as Goff’s backup, and in doing so, he made it clear that Hooker had yet to secure a defined role in Detroit. As a developmental quarterback, Hooker saw very limited action in his rookie year and was even left off the active roster for the Lions’ playoff game against the Washington Commanders. That decision raised some eyebrows, as it suggested the coaching staff didn’t see him as a reliable option just yet. With Goff locked into a long-term deal, it’s fair to wonder where Hooker fits into Detroit’s future plans.
Why Detroit Might Trade Hooker
Given Goff’s firm grip on the starting job, Hooker’s chances of getting meaningful playing time in Detroit seem slim. The Lions already have most of their roster set, and with key players signed to long-term deals, Hooker could be a valuable trade asset. Analysts at TWSN predict that Detroit might explore trading him this offseason, possibly landing a fourth-round pick in return from a team in need of a young quarterback.
Moving Hooker could also allow the Lions to pursue a more experienced backup—someone who has proven they can step in and manage a game if Goff were to miss time. With Hooker still developing and lacking in-game experience, Detroit might prefer a quarterback with a history of handling high-pressure situations.
A New Beginning for Hooker?
If Hooker is traded, it could open the door for him to develop into a starter elsewhere. A fresh start might be the best path for both parties—Hooker would get a chance to grow in a new system, while the Lions could bring in a more seasoned backup to better support Goff in 2025 and beyond.
That said, unless Detroit receives an offer too good to refuse, they may choose to hold on to Hooker and continue his development within their system.
