Lions Urged to Sign the ‘Perfect Fix’ for Roster Gap

The Detroit Lions are entering the offseason with one goal in mind—strengthening their roster to make another deep playoff run. With several key players set to hit free agency, the team has some big decisions to make, especially when it comes to the secondary. Analysts are already suggesting that Detroit should target recently released cornerback Kendall Fuller, as well as explore a potential trade for Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II.

Could Kendall Fuller Be a Fit for Detroit?
The Miami Dolphins recently parted ways with Fuller, who signed a two-year, $15 million contract with them last offseason. While he had a strong 2023 campaign with the Washington Commanders, injuries hampered his performance in 2024, causing his Pro Football Focus grade to drop from 82.8 to 62.4. Despite the dip in production, some believe Fuller could thrive in Detroit’s system.

NFL analyst Devon Platana made the case for the Lions to pursue Fuller, pointing out that several of the team’s cornerbacks—Carlton Davis, Emmanuel Moseley, and others—are set to become free agents. That means Detroit will likely be looking for replacements, and Fuller could be an affordable veteran option.

Platana also noted that head coach Dan Campbell and his staff have a track record of getting the most out of players. Given Fuller’s experience and past success, the Lions could offer the perfect environment for him to bounce back. At 30 years old, he still has the potential to contribute at a high level if he stays healthy.

Another Trade Target: Greg Newsome II
While signing Fuller could be a low-risk move in free agency, the Lions might also explore the trade market. One intriguing name is Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report pointed out that the Browns are in a tough financial situation, with a projected $34.2 million cap deficit. The team will need to make some tough roster decisions, and one way to clear cap space could be trading Newsome. ESPN’s Ben Solak echoed that sentiment, stating that Cleveland may need to move on from either Newsome or star corner Denzel Ward.

Trading Ward would actually cost the Browns $5.8 million against the cap before June 1, whereas moving Newsome would free up $13.4 million. That makes Newsome a more likely trade candidate, and for a team like Detroit looking for a young, talented cornerback, he could be a great fit.

What’s Next for the Lions?
With free agency approaching—starting with the NFL’s legal tampering period on March 10—the Lions will have plenty of opportunities to upgrade their roster. Cornerback is a clear area of need, and whether they go after a veteran like Fuller or make a trade for a young talent like Newsome, they have options.

Brad Holmes and the Lions’ front office have been aggressive in building a contender, and this offseason will be no different. With Detroit looking to take the next step toward a Super Bowl, adding the right pieces to the defense will be crucial. Keep an eye on how they approach the secondary in the coming weeks.
