The Detroit Lions are looking to bolster their defense by providing Aidan Hutchinson with a worthy running partner. Hutchinson, the second overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, had a solid rookie season, recording 9.5 sacks and 52 tackles. However, the Lions’ pass rush struggled to consistently pressure opposing quarterbacks, and the team’s defense ranked 28th in the league in terms of sacks.
To address this issue, the Lions are urged to consider signing a proven edge rusher to pair with Hutchinson. One player who could fit the bill is Khalil Mack, a four-time All-Pro edge rusher who is set to become a free agent. Mack, 32, has been one of the most dominant pass rushers in the NFL over the past decade, recording 84.5 sacks and 23 forced fumbles in his career.
While Mack’s most dominant days may be behind him, he can still bring valuable pressure and expertise to the Lions’ defense. In 2022, Mack recorded 39 total tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles, and nine passes defended in 17 games with the Los Angeles Chargers. His presence would not only provide a boost to the Lions’ pass rush but also help to free up Hutchinson to make plays on the opposite side.
Another option for the Lions to consider is signing a cornerback to pair with Jeff Okudah and Jerry Jacobs. One player who could fit the bill is Charvarius Ward, a 27-year-old cornerback who is set to become a free agent. Ward has been a solid starter for the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers over the past four seasons, recording 10 interceptions and 43 passes defended in 64 games.
Ward’s skills would complement the Lions’ pass rush nicely, as he is capable of pressing or pedaling off the ball and making plays in zone coverage. His presence would also help to stabilize the Lions’ secondary, which has been a weak link for the team in recent seasons.
Ultimately, adding a player like Mack or Ward would give Hutchinson the support he needs to take the Lions’ defense to the next level. With a stronger pass rush and improved secondary play, the Lions could become a more formidable opponent in the NFC North.
