Could New York Make a Move for the Arizona QB?

The New York Jets are once again in the market for a quarterback after news broke that Aaron Rodgers will not be returning for the 2025 season. With limited proven options available, the Jets may have to look beyond free agency and explore potential trade scenarios. One name that has emerged in discussions is Kyler Murray, the talented yet polarizing quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals.

Murray’s Future in Arizona Remains Uncertain

Despite the Cardinals’ insistence that Murray remains their quarterback for 2025, speculation about his future continues to swirl. The upcoming season is widely viewed as a make-or-break year for the former No. 1 overall pick, who has yet to deliver the consistency expected of a franchise quarterback.

Murray, now entering his seventh NFL season, has been a divisive figure in Arizona. While his athleticism and playmaking ability are undeniable, questions remain about his long-term fit with the organization. Some analysts believe his time in Arizona could be winding down, whether this offseason or in the near future.

Jets Eyeing Murray as a Potential Target

The Athletic recently compiled a list of potential quarterback targets for the Jets, and Murray’s name was included among the possibilities.

NFL reporter Zack Rosenblatt analyzed Murray’s 2024 season, highlighting both his strong performances and inconsistencies:

“The 27-year-old had a solid, if inconsistent, season with the Cardinals in 2024. His best game probably came against the Jets on Nov. 10 (he completed 22 of 24 passes). He finished with 3,851 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 68.8 completion percentage while rushing for 572 yards and five touchdowns.”

Rosenblatt also noted that Murray’s contract situation could make him a more attractive trade option:

“He’s dynamic and his contract is reasonable at this stage ($18 million base salary in 2025, $22.8 million in 2026 and $19.5 million in 2027). The Cardinals would only incur a $10.7 million dead-cap hit in 2025 if they cut him post-June 1 and could replenish some draft capital.”

Will the Cardinals Actually Trade Murray?

While the idea of moving on from Murray has been floated, the Cardinals seem committed to keeping him for at least another season. Arizona is positioning itself as a potential playoff contender, and parting ways with their starting quarterback could derail those hopes.

However, if the Jets come calling with a strong offer, Arizona may have to reconsider. The lack of high-level quarterback options available this offseason could drive up Murray’s value, making him a realistic trade target for New York.

For now, the Cardinals insist that Murray is their guy—but in the NFL, things can change quickly. If New York is serious about finding a long-term answer at quarterback, a move for Kyler Murray could be on the table.
