3 Lions Players Who Didn’t Live Up to Expectations in 2024

The Lions have been on the rise these past two seasons, but with the 2025 free agency approaching, there are still some clear needs to address—especially when it comes to players who just haven’t worked out. Despite GM Brad Holmes’ success in the draft, not every pick pans out, and there are a few Lions players we can now consider busts after the 2024 season.

First up is DT Brodric Martin. Detroit gave up three Day 3 picks to move up and take Martin at No. 96 in the 2023 draft, but injuries and lack of development have kept him from making an impact. He spent most of 2024 on IR and was a healthy scratch late in the season, playing in just two games. With no real role for 2025, he’s at risk of being cut, especially with the new defensive line coach trying to salvage something.

Next is safety Ifeatu Melifonwu, the player the Lions picked with the first draft pick they got from the Matthew Stafford trade. Injuries have defined his career, and in 2024, he spent a good chunk of the season on IR. Though he showed promise late in 2023, he didn’t live up to expectations in 2024. He’s now a free agent, and the Lions have an easy decision about his future.

Finally, there’s DE Josh Paschal. After two injury-filled seasons, 2024 was supposed to be his breakout year. While he played in 14 games, his impact was underwhelming, finishing with only two sacks and barely registering on the pass-rush front. Though he’s decent against the run, the Lions need more from a pass rusher, especially with their defense struggling to generate pressure outside of Aidan Hutchinson. Paschal will get one more shot in 2025, but if he doesn’t step up, he may be looking for a new team soon.

These players are clearly on the roster bubble heading into next season, and the Lions will need to make some tough calls as they look to build a Super Bowl contender.
