Eagles’ Darius Slay Hints at Potential Reunion with Lions Amid Contract Uncertainty

Could Darius Slay Be Heading Back to the Lions?

The Philadelphia Eagles are gearing up for the 2025 season after securing a Super Bowl victory, but they’ve got some big decisions to make this offseason—especially when it comes to veteran cornerback Darius Slay. While Slay is still under contract through 2025, there’s growing speculation that his time in Philly could be coming to an end.

Slay recently appeared on the “St. Brown Podcast,” hosted by Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown, and made it clear that if he were to leave the Eagles, there are only two teams he’d want to play for: Philadelphia or Detroit.

A Reunion in Detroit?

The idea of Slay returning to the Lions is picking up steam, especially since the Eagles could decide to cut ties with him for salary cap reasons. Releasing him as a post-June 1 cut would save Philadelphia a significant amount of money, and his $16.1 million roster option, which isn’t guaranteed, adds to the likelihood of his departure.

If Slay does hit free agency, Detroit could be a natural landing spot. The Lions originally drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft, and he played seven strong seasons in Detroit before being traded to the Eagles in 2020. During his time with the Lions, he racked up 296 solo tackles, 104 pass breakups, and 19 interceptions.

Now, with the Lions possibly losing Carlton Davis in free agency, they might have a need for a veteran corner with Slay’s experience and leadership. And let’s not forget—he’s a fan favorite in Detroit, and the connection with the city runs deep.

Slay’s Performance and Potential Fit

Even at 34 years old, Slay remains a reliable corner. In 14 games last season, he recorded 49 tackles, 13 pass deflections, and allowed a 78.3 passer rating in coverage. While his Pro Football Focus grades (67.6 overall, 68.9 coverage) weren’t elite, he still performed at a high level, and his veteran presence could be invaluable for a Lions team looking to build on their recent success.

Of course, the decision ultimately lies with the Eagles. If they choose to keep him, Slay will remain a key piece of their secondary. But if they move on, a Detroit homecoming might be on the horizon.

What do you think, Lions fans? Would you welcome Slay back to Detroit? Or should the team focus on younger options in the secondary?
