Vikings Face Tough Decisions: Could Sam Darnold Be on the Way Out?
Despite leading the Minnesota Vikings to an impressive 14-3 record in 2024, Sam Darnold might not be back for the 2025 season. The veteran quarterback, who signed a one-year, $10 million deal, stepped up when rookie J.J. McCarthy went down with a preseason injury. Darnold shocked everyone with 4,319 yards, 35 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, proving he could be a legitimate QB1.
But now comes the tough question—is he worth the price tag? With Darnold likely commanding at least $35 million per year, the Vikings have to weigh their options. Do they roll with McCarthy, who was drafted to be the future, or invest heavily in Darnold and risk limiting their roster flexibility? His struggles against the Lions in the season finale and the Rams in the playoffs didn’t help his case.
Along with Darnold, Harrison Smith and Garrett Bradbury are also cut candidates. Smith, a six-time Pro Bowler, has been a defensive leader, but at 36 years old, the Vikings may look for younger options. Bradbury, a former first-round pick, has struggled against elite interior defenders, making his future uncertain as well.
With major roster decisions looming, the Vikings must decide if Darnold was a one-year wonder or their long-term answer under center.
