Could Jonah Jackson Make a Detroit Comeback?
Potential reunions are becoming a trend for the Detroit Lions. First, former cornerback Darius Slay expressed interest in a return. Now, speculation is growing around another familiar face: Jonah Jackson.
A Possible Cut Candidate
NFL.com’s Matt Okada recently identified Jackson, a former Lions standout, as a potential cut candidate for the Los Angeles Rams. With his future in Los Angeles uncertain, AtoZ Sports’ Mike Payton suggested the Lions should consider bringing him back if he becomes available.
The Lions originally selected Jackson in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he quickly became a key figure on their offensive line. He started all 16 games as a rookie and earned a Pro Bowl nod in his second season. Jackson remained Detroit’s starter for two more years before hitting free agency, where he secured a lucrative three-year, $51 million contract with the Rams.
A Tough Year in Los Angeles
Jackson’s move to Los Angeles didn’t go as planned. Injuries limited him to just four games in 2024, and in that short span, he allowed nine pressures. Given his high salary and lack of availability, the Rams could decide to part ways with him this offseason.
If that happens, the timing could work out perfectly for Detroit. The Lions signed Kevin Zeitler to replace Jackson last year, and while Zeitler performed well, he’s now a free agent. With Zeitler’s market heating up, Detroit might need a reliable veteran presence on the offensive line.
Why Jackson Makes Sense for Detroit
The Lions do have Christian Mahogany as an internal option, but with only two career starts, he remains an unproven commodity. Bringing Jackson back would provide immediate stability while Mahogany continues to develop.
Of course, Jackson’s recent injury history is a concern. However, when healthy, he has proven to be a valuable piece of the offensive line. Additionally, his market value has likely dipped due to his limited availability, making a return to Detroit a financially reasonable move.
Will the Lions Make a Move?
For now, everything hinges on the Rams’ decision. If they decide to release Jackson, the Lions could be in prime position to bring back their former Pro Bowler. Given his familiarity with the team and system, a reunion might be the perfect solution for both sides.
